Since early 2009, the Pacific Ocean coastal region of Portland, Oregon has become a hot spot for scenic getaways. There has been a surge in the number of quality hotels and vacation rental homes that are available in the area. So, we wanted to explore the area with you through the lens of a day trip around the area.
Our drive is going to bring us into contact with the rugged beauty of the Pacific Ocean coast, juxtaposed against the modern, stylish designs of the coastal restaurants and hotels. So here we go. Better be ready for great still life shots of the ocean, that could be used for your own post cards to the ones you love.
Our day trip is going to take us from Portaland, Oregon to Astoria, Oregon, along U.S. Hwy 30. This area is in Clatsop County. It follows a lot of the historic trail that was used by the adventurers, Lewis and Clark, to find their way to the Pacific Ocean.
An alternate route will also take you down Washington’s Ocean Beach Highway. You can cross the Oregon Way Bridge, around Rainer. You would return via Route 30 by Cathlamet.
The town is old and very historic. In fact, Astoria is the oldest American settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. It was founded in 1811. (Many states were still to be formed at the point in history, including mid western states like Illinois and Missouri.) The town had a booming fishing industry going at one time, so the local folk have tried to revitalize that sector of town. The local Riverfront Trolley system has also been revamped.
While you are in Astoria, take in the view of the Columbia River from the Astoria Column. It is over a 100 ft tall. You will also be able to see the famous Astoria Bridge, which connects Oregon and Washington.
One of the places you may wish to consider staying is the Cannery Pier Hotel, which was built on the site of one of the town’s earliest fish packing plants. It is a loft style hotel, and features a pier that extends over 500 ft out into the surrounding Ocean. The hotel offers 46 rooms for rent, The rooms currently rent for $169 per night during the week, and $209 on the weekend, but there are packages offered. The hotel also has a spa, and can even get you on a cruise of the river.
For a great night out to eat, try to the Bridgewater Bistro. You can get dinner there for two for around $80, and have a fabulous meal. There is a tasting room there for the Flying Dutchman Winery. You must simply try the watermelon and feta salad also.
Seaport Airlines can get you into the area, as well as let you get back to a major hub in Portland or Seattle also. So, this may be an option for returning to the big city, versus taking a rental car. There are many other possibilities in this area for day drives along the coast. So, get creative, and take a trip along the ocean in Oregon.

The trip is awesome and want to travel along Oregon’s Pacific Ocean Coast.I surely travel this route as a back packer.Good post.
Now that I live on a Greek island I still miss the coast of my childhood, Oregon.
I will be back for a visit this winter, not the best time for sure.
Cheers,
Dear Michael,
I am glad I could remind you of home for a bit.
