Despite the falling pound and gloomy economic outlook the small Canary Island of Lanzarote still welcomed over 1.5 million foreign tourists during the course of 2008. With over 50% of these visitors hailing from the UK and Eire. And whilst these numbers may fall back in 2009 Lanzarote still offers excellent value for money for the budget conscious holidaymaker.
Lanzarote is serviced by some of the leading operators in the world of low cost travel. Such as easyJet, Monarch and Thomas Cook. Ensuring that there is usually a reliable supply of cheap flights to Lanzarote. Thomas Cook for example are currently offering returns to the Island of Fire for as little as £100. And even during busier times of the year it is usually possible to secure a return flight for less than £200.
Playa Blanca in the south of the island offers the best selection of low cost holiday villas in Lanzarote. The resort is the newest on the island and was developed over the last decade with villas at the core of the blueprint. Many overseas investors have snapped up property here in order to rent out to other holidaymakers – so keeping prices realistic. For example, it is still possible to rent a two bedroom villa with a private pool for as little as £350 per week, which is the cost per property, not per person. Factor in flights and that makes it possible for a family of four to be able to enjoy a sunshine break for under £200 per head.
For even greater savings visitors could opt for a holiday apartment in Puerto del Carmen. The islands oldest and most popular resort. This is the spot where tourism first really took off on Lanzarote. Transforming a small fishing village called La Tiñosa into the biggest resort on the island today.
Despite its size and popularity Puerto del Carmen is still only serviced by two main hotels. With apartment and apart hotel complexes accounting for the vast bulk of tourist beds. A weeks stay in a centrally located complex such as Plaza Palmeras costs as little as £170 per week – which again is the cost for the property and not per person.
Lanzarote is home to some unique tourist attractions such as the Timanfaya Volcano Park and the Jameos del Agua. And fortunately getting out and seeing the island is very affordable. As car hire starts from as little as €15 per day and petrol is also much cheaper than in the UK.
