A valid help for tourists from all over the world, absolutely free.
The work of the Tourist Angels, about 20 people who speak Italian, English, German, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese, are distributed in the tourist interest places in Rome: from the Coliseum to Piazza di Spagna but also the Termini Station and around the Vatican City or near the Pantheon and in the Piazzale Venezia area.

It will not be difficult to find them during working hours, every day, from 9.00 to 19.30.
They move around on board electric scooters with the colors and the crest of the Community of Rome. There maximum speed does not supersede the pace of the people on foot and have the job to give tourist information for free, also to help tourists and people in difficulty to resolve small typically tourist problems. (Which underground train to take, information on taxis and ticket prices etc..).

The tourist angels naturally will be a valid support, one time in which to find in Rome but it is necessary to organise your trip in time if you want to profit by some of the interesting discounts.
For example, by booking 30 days in advance your journey by train, you will have the possibility to travel in new high speed trains (Florence – Rome in 1 and a half hours) with a much reduced price. Rome is famous to be full of tourists mainly from around the world, therefore for the stay it is good to organise with some days in advance, otherwise it could be fully booked.
You will find optimal last minute offers on this site www.city-apartments-rome.com

Anyone who goes on vacation will be faced with two main options to consider with regards to food. Do you choose catered accommodation or self-catered. The choice may be easy for some, but for others it deserves more consideration. Here are some of the key points to consider before you make a booking.

Budget

If you are expecting food with your accommodation, you should also be expecting to hand over more dosh than if you source your own grub. The cost of including food does however vary tremendously between hotels and if you hunt around, you can often find some bargains. Hotels often subsidise the cost of adding food as they want to secure your room booking above all else.  Having said this, if you plan your self catering well, there is no doubt that you can save a small fortune. Some holiday villas for example will come complete with a kitchen where you can prepare your own food of an evening and make a nice packed lunch whilst you’re out enjoying yourself.

You may however choose to eat at restaurants rather than make your own meals, and in this case it’s unlikely that you’ll save much money over the catered option.  Something else to consider is that you will likely have to fork out for transport to and from restaurants, which can soon add up if you’re staying somewhere out of town.

Time

There is no doubt that catered accommodation is convenient. You don’t have to waste time in the morning making your meals for the day, or hunting around for somewhere to get your morning omelet or pancakes.  Additionally, it is very easy to secure a reservation at a hotel restaurant so you won’t be worrying come dinner time about losing the last table in a local eatery to someone who claims to be “big in Hollywood.”

Having said this, there is not always the option of a packed lunch from catered accommodation choices, so you might find that you can never venture too far from your base in order to make it back for each meal. This can be a real drag and cause havoc with your time allowance.

Enjoyment

Whether the catered or self catered option is more enjoyable really depends on myriad factors. For example, a hotel might have a Michelin rated chef working in their restaurant and likewise might showcase different world-class entertainment each evening for dinner’s pleasure. Alternatively they may offer the same meal each day and have an amateur guitar player reciting ‘Lady in Red’ on loop, in the wrong key.

When it comes to enjoyment then you really have to ask yourself whether you’ll like eating at the same place every day, or you’re more adventurous and want to sample a few places around town. It also pays to do your research on the hotel to find out what kind of food is on offer and even how many restaurants there are at a particular resort.  You may also want to research local restaurants before you book as you may be missing out on a gem by choosing catered accommodation.

The other consideration is that you might really enjoy cooking and if your accommodation provides cooking facilities, it can be great fun to try your hand at some local delicacies.

As a last piece of advice, hotels often offer an upgrade facility whereby you can change from self-catered to catered accommodation if you wish, even after you have arrived. Always check with the hotel first, but if they do allow this it can be a great way to get the best of both worlds.

When you go on holiday this summer, you may find that your route takes you through one of the many road tunnels in Britain. One minute you’re in sunlight, and the next you are moving along in a tunnel with an orange glow. From Cornwall to Clyde, there are plenty of tunnels to find. Make sure to read up on road information and any special tunnel safety advice before you set off.

Saltash Tunnel, Cornwall

Although the Saltash Tunnel isn’t one of the longest, it does have the excitement of being followed by a bridge. The 410m tunnel, opened in 1988, leads to the Tamar Bridge which goes between Devon and Cornwall. There are three lanes; one of these is reversible for when there is a high amount of traffic heading one direction[1].

Mersey Tunnels, Merseyside

There are three tunnels classified as Mersey Tunnels, although only two of these are for car use. The Kingsway Tunnel connects Liverpool with Wallasey, while the Queensway Tunnel runs from Liverpool to Birkenhead. These roads stretch from Liverpool to the Wirral Peninsula under the River Mersey[2].

Clyde Tunnel, Glasgow

The Clyde Tunnel is essential for traffic flow for Glasgow and the West of Scotland. There are actually two tunnels of 762 metres: one going northbound, and one going southbound. Each tunnel has a cycle lane and pedestrian pathway, and in total there are about 65,000 vehicles travelling through them each day[3].

Tyne Tunnel, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne

The Tyne Tunnel will be seeing some changes in the next couple of years. A new tunnel has been in the progress of being built during the past few years, and is expected to open in 2011. When this tunnel opens, the old one will close for a year for maintenance work. Once completed, the original tunnel will be open for northbound traffic, while the new tunnel will handle southbound vehicles. Currently the toll is £1.20[4].

So wherever you choose to drive this year, just keep your fingers crossed that you will come across a tunnel. While looking really cool, they are also useful education tools to introduce your kids to engineering and problem solving.
