That assessment can definitely wait, but for now, I feel I am sitting in a Geography class for sure. The homepage is a complete assortment of Maps. As I try to get a hang of the reason why maps find their way to travel sites, spending some more time in this site just about tells me why!

This truly was one easy way I could find out different places that had rentals listed in them. Of course, I had the option of moving down and get clicking on the cities. Just ignore the Maps bit, and all you get is pure information

The easiest way to make sense out of this site is by getting accustomed to the maps. Even if you have good knowledge of World’s geography, please bear the pain of putting up with this site. Why? This is just the easiest way you could freeze on the destination where you wished to go. I know you came here looking for vacation rentals, but to get there you need to find out the place where the listings would be.

To that extent, the maps take you through a detailed and thought out process, which I feel unnecessary, to understand different rentals available at the destination of your choice.

Click on the city and get the listings

If you are not too Maps’ savvy, the other option for you is to click on the popular destinations list that is given at the bottom section of the page. Please note couple of things here – 1) You should know the place you are going to, else you would not find rentals in the place and 2) You should be able to put with the microscopic font size in this section.

Expect to strain your eyes to the maximum when you get reading the destinations where rentals are provided. That for me is one major improvement that this site can work on. But for now, I am more interested in the information provided to me about the rental. A lot of what I do from hereon will be decided by the quality of information. Hope it turns out to be decent.

Less than 100 vacation rentals in Europe! What you must be kidding?

Get clicking on Europe to find the list of vacation rentals there, and you would find not more than 100 rentals there. If I have to be precise, the number is not more than 70. Okay, that’s too few for any travel site to offer choices to travelers. This brings me to the point here – www.findvacationrentals.com can just be good for people who do not wish to see a lot of places and make a choice.

Now, the question is what do I get out of the few rentals I am getting to see off this site. Anyways, I was kind of handicapped by the choice limitations, which could be aggravated further into a double handicap if the information presented to me is not up to the mark. I would have wasted my time, and I did not want to get that feeling as yet!

Quality of Information

With crossed fingers, I tried to find out if the information about each rental was as qualitative as this site pretends to have. Just so to save myself from spending a lot of time, as this was just a diligence check, I clicked on Netherlands, which seemed to have only 1 listing. Remember, my only objective is to see the quality of information.

I am greeted with a short two-line description about the rental. Just as I was thinking that this site is an absolute waste, I could see another link “Read for more information on the listing”. Interested I clicked on there only to find one complete page telling me A-Z about the rental. That’s what I call quality of information, and once I saw it, I thought that this site is not all that bad, as I had made out to be.

Area of Improvement

Can someone please tell the web designers that they should not be designing their web pages with content that cannot be read clearly? Some text in the home page just cannot be read, and I am not saying my eye power is weak. I guess the thought behind this was – Reduce the font size, and we would be able to accommodate a lot more content in the site. I am sorry Mr. Designer if you thought so, but it just does not work.

The Map idea is good, but there are very few locations to back them up. When I saw the maps first, I thought it would have a great deal of locations that could give me plenty of choices. Just as I was jumping up and down with glee, I was greeted with places having fewer than 2-5 locations. I cannot accept that because each tourist location, no matter how small they are, would have at least 10 homes to be given as vacation rentals.

My Rating

With me being unbiased completely, this site gets a rating of 3 out of 5. Trust me, if I had to look at some negatives of this site too seriously, I would have rated it 2, possibly 1. But based on the facts, and quality information that was given to me, I rate it thus.

Conclusion

www.findvacationrentals.com is a good read for one who does not know a lot on how travel rental sites work. For a person like me who has been through a lot of such sites, this one does not work in any way.
