With a range of improvements and renovations underway, Puerto del Carmen is preparing itself for the next few decades as Lanzarote’s busiest resort. It has already played host to thousands of holidays in its forty year history and is being given a facelift to maintain its popularity as a sunshine destination. In addition to pedestrian zones on the seafront, a newly extended marina with further berths and jetties and the homogenisation of shop fronts on its main avenue, the town can also now boast its own golf course. All of which should continue to keep the town at the forefront of the holiday experience in Lanzarote.
It already has an excellent range of accommodation for those seeking self-catering facilities. With some of the best luxury villas in Lanzarote available in the Los Mojones area of the town. And no shortage of apartment complexes that offer good amenities close to the town centre and beautiful beaches.
In fact, Puerto del Carmen has some of the best beaches on the island, with Playa Grande, the main three kilometre long stretch of sand, the most notable of these. It is well equipped, with sun beds, brollies, toilets, seafront cafés and gently shelves into the sea, making it ideal for paddling and playing.
Even visitors who prefer to get out and about will find that a holiday in Lanzarote ticks all the boxes. For the sports fanatics, there are plenty of activities to get involved in – such as cycling, trekking, horse-riding and paragliding. And for those who crave a little more art and culture, the island is home to several splendid tourist attractions, such as the César Manrique Foundation and the Mirador del Rio. There is also a good selection of activities for children, for instance at the Rancho Texas Park.
With hundreds of restaurants based in Puerto del Carmen, the only difficulty visitors have is choosing where to eat. The old harbour area offers some of the most atmospheric locations for dinner, at one of the restaurants overlooking the sea, such as Casa Roja. For a genuine taste of tapas, La Bodega in the old town cannot be beaten. And for those who wish to dine next to the sea, Terraza Playa (close to the casino) is one of the only restaurants that sits by the shore.
The resort is easy to get to, as it is only a ten minute drive from the airport. And cheap flights to Lanzarote are readily available from low cost operators such as Monarch and easyJet. Although there is no bus service running between Arrecife airport and Puerto del Carmen, a taxi ride is not expensive due to the shortness of the journey. Or alternatively, a wide range of car hire companies is based in the airport arrivals hall. For those who hire a car, on leaving the airport they should select the Yaiza exit and then immediately leave the motorway for Puerto del Carmen.
