When it comes to an Icelandic vacation, there is no city that is more fun than Reykjavik. Sometimes
called “the nightlife capital of the north”, this city is famous for it’s hopping club scene during the weekends. Icelanders tend to head out later at night than other people, so the bars that may seem quiet may suddenly fill up after 11 pm. One of the main reasons that people here wait so late to head out is that alcohol is pretty expensive here, so most people drink before they go out so they don’t spend as much money. Beer was actually banned in Iceland until 1989, but has now become one of the most popular drinks. You will find over one hundred different bars and night clubs in Reykjavik, and most are located on Laugavegur and it’s side streets. Of course, it is really common here for a cafe to become a bar or club in the evening, so you might find that some of the best cafes in town become hopping scenes after hours. Clubs and bars usually stay open until around 6 am on the weekends and 1 am during the week, so you can enjoy the great night life here until the sun rises if you want.
One of the funnest times to visit Reykjavik is during New Year’s Eve celebrations. It is during this time that the Icelandic law states that anyone can buy fireworks and use them during a certain period around New Year’s Eve. So, most places that sell them make their own rules about the ages of buyers, which is usually around 16. The local people here will spend thousands of dollars on fireworks which are mostly fired off on New Year’s Eve. So, every New Year’s Eve, the sky over the city lights up brighter than day light.
To enjoy the night life that Reykjavik has to offer, there are many different hotels and inns that you can stay at or you can take the time to search out vacation rentals. Most of the vacation rentals are near the major areas of the city, and if you want to stay near Laugavegur or one of it’s side streets where the clubs are located, make sure that you book early. The vacation rentals in this area will be gone fast, especially around New Year’s Eve, as the city is known for it’s celebrations during this time.
