Lanzagrotty? Hardly. This unfair epithet was coined many years ago by Monty Pythons Michael Palin. And has stuck in the psyche of many British holidaymakers ever since. But mention this to visitors from other countries and you´ll be met with incredulity. As elsewhere in Europe Lanzarote is regarded as the coolest of the Canaries. Thanks to the island’s many attractions and high standards of holiday accommodation.
Indeed there are no ranks of high rise hotels on Lanzarote or billboards competing for the attention of holidaymakers. As these were all outlawed years ago back in the 1970´s. At a time when Lanzarote was regarded as the new hot travel destination. Thanks to the efforts of the local born artist Cesar Manrique, who really put the island on the map with his incredible creations, such as the Jameos del Agua and the Jardin de Cactus.
These works helped to attract a whole raft of VIP visitors in the early 1970´s. Including actors such as Peter Sellers and Omar Sharif. Whilst even the King of Spain maintains and uses a residence on the island at Las Maretas in Costa Teguise.
Today the famous guests are a little thinner on the ground but visitors can still choose from a broad range of top quality accommodation, encompassing five star hotels and luxurious private rental properties. The best villas in Lanzarote can be found in and around the resort of Playa Blanca. But there´s also plenty of character properties in Lanzarote´s volcanic countryside available for rent.
Lanzarote is an ideal destination for anyone who enjoys sightseeing as well as sunbathing. Measuring just 60km by 40km the island is easy to tour and navigate and boasts loads of natural beauty spots as well as Manrique´s man made attractions.
The Timanafaya Volcano Park is the most popular tourist spot on the island. Boasting a bizarre landscape formed by a series of volcanic eruptions centuries ago. Whilst elsewhere visitors can view the famous Green Lagoon at El Golfo.
Star of many a science fiction movie, such as One Million Years BC.
Lanzarote is also soon set to star again in the latest movie release from Pedro Almodovar. Whose film Broken Embraces, starring Penelope Cruz, was shot on location across the island. And will soon be screened in cinemas across the UK from August. With island authorities hoping this will have a similar impact on tourist numbers as the release of Mamma Mia did for the island of Skopelos.
