Offering Internet in your Vacation Rental
In the technological world we live in today, many people cannot make do without having an Internet connection in their home. I know I’d go mad if I couldn’t at least check my email once a day. Many vacationers feel the same way, which is what makes the service one of the most sought amenities when travelers are searching for lodging. Almost half of the United States population carries along a laptop when they travel, so you may be missing out on a fair amount of business if you are not offering the amenity in your vacation rental.
If you are technologically declined (my version for the opposite of technologically inclined!), then you may be wondering what kinds of Internet are available, and what the best option would be for your rental property. Below I will define your options and then let you know which is best, in my opinion.
Choices:
Dial Up: Your cheapest option, but also your slowest (tremendously slower than the others). This also requires a telephone line. A dedicated line (a second line in your home used solely for this purpose) would be recommended because tie up the line when being used. Many renters will still look past your vacation home if they are seeking reliable Internet, because this is the worst connection.
DSL: This is a bit more expensive than dial up, but is A LOT faster! DSL also uses telephone lines, but doesn’t make them busy. You can still make telephone calls when you are connected to the Internet in this way.
Cable: In my experience, about the same speed as DSL. This can be bundled with your cable TV, if you choose to offer it.
Wireless: Often the best option for travelers with a laptop. This will allow your guests to have an Internet connection without hooking any wires up to their computers. This gives multiple users the freedom to browse the Internet at the same time. This is great if you have multiple children, or impatient family members!
Nowadays, more people are benefiting from the features of wireless (or WI-FI) Internet. I would recommend this option for your vacation home. It is one of the faster options that is suitable for the way many people live…quick, and always on the go! It can be assumed that you will always have multiple guests vacationing in your home, and more than one of them may have a computer or other mobile device to connect to the Internet with. Offering a connection that allows everyone to check their email or browse the Internet simultaneously will make for a happy vacation!
