Why Hiring a Vacation Rental Housekeeper is Highly Recommended

vacation rental housekeepingUnless you live close enough to stop by and clean your vacation rental in between each guest, it is essential to hire a housekeeping service. Of course, you could choose to require that the renters clean the home before they leave, but that could prove to be very harmful to your vacation rental business. Everyone has a different definition of the word “clean,” and your perception of the term may vary greatly from that of your renters. If you hire a housekeeper, however, you are more likely to get an immaculate home waiting for your new guests.

Since you are paying them to make sure your vacation rental home is spotless in between rentals, housekeeping crews are more likely to have anything in tip top shape. Your previous renters may do some general cleaning, such as sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping, but will they dust all the surfaces? What about wash the bed sheets? Clean the kitchen appliances? Will they use cleaning supplies at all? (Some people consider a countertop clean by just wiping it with a wet rag…definitely not sanitary!) You can make your housekeepers aware of your idea of a clean home, so that it will look good for each new booking.

Not only will your housekeeper keep your vacation rental looking beautiful on the inside (and possibly outside), they can also search for anything broken and in need of repair. Your guests may never report the leaky faucet or the fact that there are only 2 bath towels in the master bath (where there were previously 4), but your housekeeper will know what to look for, and will report their findings to you. You can keep extras of certain items in a storage closet, and have the housekeepers replenish things as they break or need replacing.

If you leave welcome gifts and treats for your guests, you can have your housekeeper refill the home with these. Be sure to keep the items in a safe and easily accessible place in the home so that the staff can set them out when they are finished cleaning the vacation rental. Make sure it’s nothing too complicated (you shouldn’t expect them to create a whole welcome basket before they leave. If this is how you want to go, you should request the services of a florist or someone who will do this for you and then drop it off at your home). If you choose the idea of leaving small goodies throughout the home, your housekeeper should be happy to replace these items in between guests.

I would suggest that you impose a cleaning fee to help you with the costs of hiring a vacation rental housekeeping service. Many renters are content with paying it, as they do not want to have to clean your rental home themselves. You will have a few guests that ask about waiving the fee and letting them clean it. Just state your rules and you are sure not to lose a booking.
