We all know that Singapore is a busy city but it has many nature reserves as part of the government’s plan to preserve its rainforests and many of its local fauna and flora. Among of the many nature reserves include Timah Nature Reserve, Sentosa Dragon Trail Nature Reserve and MacRitchie Reservoir Nature Reserve. The Timah Nature Reserve has wide variety of plant species, which has more than that in the whole of North America. The Sentosa Dragon Trail Nature Reserve is part of the resort island. The MacRitchie Resrvoir Nature Reserve is the favorite of many hikers, joggers, couples and families. And I want to share my experience in this place.
Going on a tour with a volunteer guide is the best way to see and learn more about the special forest at MacRitchie Reservoir. It is Singapore’s oldest reservoir. During the tour, we were informed that the forest around the reservoir was protected as a water catchments reserve, as well as the forests surrounding the other two reservoirs, Peirce and Seletar.
Through the forest, there are boardwalks skirting the edge and walking trails. Also, we can see signboards along the boardwalks for a self-guided tour along the fringes. Indeed the boardwalk allows for easy exploration of freshwater wildlife. Furthermore, there were also intriguing Ant plant and pitcher plants. The place is really good for bird watching. We can look out for monitor lizards, squirrels, giant milipedes and terrapins. I also like the suspended bridge for visitors to do the ‘tree-top walk’. I was attracted with the 250m aerial free standing suspension bridge spanning Bukit Peirce and Bukit Kalang, which are the two highest points in MacRitchie. This bridge really offers a panoramic view of Upper Peirce Reservoir and the surrounding lush rainforest, by which we can also enjoy the sounds and sights of native birds in the morning.
