If you’re an avid skier, you probably already know about the many amazing ski resorts in British Columbia, Canada. If you’re a new skier, then how does a region with the highest mountain range in Canada, and the most ski resorts, sound? Of course, there is beautiful Whistler which was heavily featured during the 2010 Winter Olympics, but there are other possibilities. Grouse Mountain, North Vancouver
For those who like a good dose of urban life during their ski trips, Grouse Mountain is the perfect choice. It’s a short drive away from downtown Vancouver, and you can even do it with public transit! Grouse Mountain has 26 runs, and is open until 10PM, making for the best evening skiing in town. And you can enjoy your after-ski party in any of downtown Vancouver’s hot night clubs! Because of its proximity, Grouse Mountain is a very busy resort, so expect big crowds even during weekdays.
Mount Washington Resort, Comox Valley, Vancouver Island
The mountains in BC are not only on the mainland. Vancouver Island, the big piece of land just west of the coast, also has a very highly rated ski resort. Mount Washington is a favourite of Vancouver Islanders, as well as people from the mainland. Mount Washington has 50 runs, and even tubing hills for the kids and the kids-at-heart! It also has a nice snowboard park for those who want to practice their tricks. After a long day on the slopes, you can head back down to Comox for a relaxing evening with ocean views, or you can even take a drive down to Nanaimo and Victoria for a few days.
Sun Peaks Resort
In the Okanagan Valley, about 3.5 hours east of Vancouver, you will find the Sun Peaks Resort, the second largest in the province after Whistler. It deserves its name because the Okanagan is the sunniest place in the province. With over 100 runs, ski camps for kids and an European-inspired village, Sun Peaks has something for everyone. Twelve lifts, four of them quads, take you up the peaks. Enjoy the sunny Okanagan from the top of the mountain, and go down slopes for all skill levels. The Okanagan is known for its wineries, so enjoy among the best restaurants in the province.
As you can see, British Columbia has a wide variety of resorts, and this is just a small sample. There are over 20 resorts all over the province, all easily accessible by car or by plane. Just make sure you have that cheap travel insurance to save, because you won’t want to leave the resort until ski season is over!
