The beautiful Balearic Island of Mallorca is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe.  Welcoming around 6 million visitors ever year – the majorly of them from the UK and Germany.  Along with a plenty of Spanish tourists too.

The island was under Muslim rule for centuries until it was liberated by Jaime 1 in the early 13th century.  His son then marked this symbolic victory by placing the fist stones of what is now Palma Cathedral on the same spot as the Moors main mosque.  The Cathedral today is Mallorca’s most impressive building and has undergone numerous improvements and additions over the years.  Most famously when Guadi walked out on a restoatrion project in the early 20th century.

During the 1980´s the island began to earn a reputation as a bit of a downmarket destination. Thanks to the antics of Club 18-30 holidaymakers in resorts such as Magaluf, which is located in the south of the island.  Whilst that’s all largely history today the north of the island is still regarded as a bit more upmarket and sophisticated as a result.  With the best selection of hotels and holiday villas in Mallorca to be found in and around historic towns such as Pollensa.

The island is home to around 700,000 officially registered residents.  But this population swells enormously during the summer season, which runs from May through until September.  As hordes of tourists descend on the island from across Europe.

Often this influx includes a number of VIP visitors as Mallorca is a favoured haut of the rich and famous.  The island is home to tennis star Rafa Nadal and has recently welcomed Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones.  Whilst in yeas gone by it has been visited by famous names such as Chopin, Miro and Robert Graves.

Mallorca is the largest of the four Balearic Island group – which also includes Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera.  And as a result there are a large number of holiday destinations to choose from.  First time visitors should be aware that some of these cater to specific nationalities and age groups.  So it pays to research your choice of resort before booking.

The most popular spots with British tourists include Cala Dor on the east coast, which boasts seven sandy coves.  There’s also a good selection of hotels and holiday villas in Cala D’or available for rent.

The north coast is also a hot favourite – with visitors from the UK often plumping for Alcudia – home to the islands’ biggest beach.  Along with Puerto Pollensa, which is the coastal sister resort to the former Roman settlement of Pollensa, located some 8km inland.

  1. I love to be at beaches and that’s why for my each holiday I consider the place where I can find a beach. My last holidays was at Bali. And that was fabulous.
