Located a kilometer east of the Dam is the Nieuwmarkt. This square has gradually become a small entertainment center with many pubs and pavement cafés. The Nieuwmarkt borders on an old and world-famous district: the Red Light District (‘De Wallen’). Along the canals and small alleys the ‘world’s oldest profession’ since the Middle Ages is practiced. The direct environment of the Nieuwmarkt is also known as ‘China Town’ due to the many Chinese restaurants and shops.

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS): Approximate driving time to the apartment is 20 minutes and distance is 7 kilometers (5 miles).



There is a railway station in the terminal’s central hall, under Schiphol Plaza; direct trains run to Amsterdam Central Station approximately every 15 minutes. The apartment is within walking distance of the station or take the Metro for one stop to Nieuwmarkt Square (20 meters away from apartment). Schiphol Travel Taxis are available from outside the arrivals hall. A taxi costs approximately €40. Public buses run regularly to Amsterdam and other cities.



Driving directions: From the airport take the ring road/A10 and follow signs to Centrum (City Center). Then follow signs for Nieuwmarkt.



Much of Amsterdam can be explored on foot although trams run throughout the city. More adventurous visitors may wish to hire bicycles.
